Newton Canal, Merseyside
There are plenty of fish in this 500m stretch of canal in Newton-le-Willows.
Whether you’re looking for a few hours on the float, some surface fishing for carp or targeting the predators, it has it all.
Bigger hooks and strong tackle is a must as they fight hard by the snags
If you’re after the bigger specimens, don’t be afraid to put lots of bait in, there are smaller fish around so make sure there is plenty left over for the carp when they arrive.
I’d stay well clear of hemp and small pellet in your mix though, this will get the roach and bream active.
There are plenty of snags and the carp fight hard here, so make sure to use big hooks and strong tackle so you can keep them away once hooked.
I usually use a size 4, 5 or 6 with heavy rods and a strong coated hooklink material, because of the snags I’d also suggest a leader of some sort. As it’s a canal, there are no strict rules so go with what you’re confident in and step it up a level if required.
The majority of pegs produce fish but those with overhanging trees are my go to spots and generally out fish the others.
If you can locate some fish and get them feeding the rewards are there.
