The Grand Union canal around Stoke Bruerne is an ideal venue for those carp anglers looking for a bit of a challenge, somewhere you can travel light, have the whole place to yourself and have a bit of mystery about what is lurking beneath.
Often devoid of anglers, the Grand Union is one of the best stocked venues in the area!
What do I need to know?
Often completely devoid of anglers (especially those after carp) the stretch is littered with features, from moored boats, locks and a small marina up towards the river Tove area (my favourite).
You also have the famous ‘tunnel’ at the other end.
The majority of the resident carp in this stretch can be found around the central town areas where people feed the ducks and the locals toss food and warm up their boats consistently.
Basic rigs are the order of the day, big hooks and big hard baits to avoid the nuisance species and crayfish.
Fish under your rods tips to avoid needing to cast every two minutes as the stretch is very popular for boats.
A pole cup can really help and back-leads are an essential if you’re looking to spend more than an hour in any spot.
Don’t forget your polaroids, mixers and a travel light.
